Edwidge Danticat is a highly acclaimed author, born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 19, 1969. When she was two, her father, Andre, immigrated to New York, followed by her mother, Rose, two years later. Danticat and her younger brother, Eliab, were left in the care of their aunt and uncle in Haiti. Her early education was conducted in French, but at home, she spoke Haitian Creole, a cultural duality that would later influence her writing.
At the age of twelve, Danticat moved to the United States, an experience that significantly shaped her life and work. She is the author of several noteworthy books, including "Breath, Eyes, Memory," which was selected for Oprah's Book Club, "Krik? Krak!", a finalist for the National Book Award, and "The Farming of Bones", an American Book Award winner. Danticat has also demonstrated her editorial skills by overseeing "The Butterfly's Way: Voices from the Haitian Dyaspora in the United States" and "The Beacon Best of 2000: Great Writing by Men and Women of All Colors and Cultures".
Danticat's educational journey in the United States was marked by significant achievements. She earned a degree in French Literature from Barnard College, where she was awarded the 1995 Woman of Achievement Award. She furthered her studies at Brown University, obtaining an MFA. Currently, she resides in Miami with her husband and daughters, continuing to contribute to the literary world with her unique perspective and storytelling.
