Elizabeth Peters was the pseudonym of American author Barbara Mertz, who wrote suspense, mystery, and thriller novels under this name. She is best known for her Amelia Peabody series, as well as her Vicky Bliss series. Mertz's interest in Egyptology, which she studied at the University of Chicago where she earned a PhD, is evident in her work, particularly the Amelia Peabody series. The series' protagonist, Amelia Peabody, is even named after the author's two children.
In addition to her work as Elizabeth Peters, Mertz also wrote under the pseudonym Barbara Michaels, as well as her own name. She was a prolific author, producing a wide range of literature across multiple series. Her writing is known for its historical backdrops and intricate plotlines. Mertz's contributions to the mystery genre were recognized with several prestigious awards, including being named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998.
