Emily Raboteau

Emily Raboteau is an acclaimed writer whose work explores themes of social and environmental justice, race, climate change, and parenthood. She is the author of the nonfiction book "Searching for Zion," which won an American Book Award and was a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, as well as the novel "The Professor’s Daughter." Her most recent work, "Lessons for Survival," was shortlisted for the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize and reflects her deepened focus on the climate crisis following the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.

Raboteau’s essays and reporting have appeared in prominent publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Atlantic, and have been anthologized in collections like "Best American Science Writing" and "Best American Travel Writing." A contributing editor at Orion Magazine and a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books, she has received numerous accolades, including the Climate Narratives Prize and the Deadline Club Award in Feature Reporting. Her work has been supported by grants and fellowships from organizations such as the NEA, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and MacDowell.

A professor of creative writing in the Black Studies Department at the City College of New York (CUNY), Raboteau also serves as nonfiction faculty at the Bread Loaf Environmental Writing Conference. She resides in the Bronx with her family.
