Emma Bull

Emma Bull is a highly regarded fantasy and science fiction novelist, known for her unique storytelling and imaginative works. She was born in Torrance, California, and her parents quickly noticed her talent for storytelling during her childhood. Bull's love for writing led her to pursue a career in the genre, and she eventually graduated from Beloit College in 1976.

Bull's work is known for its originality and innovation, and she has made significant contributions to the urban fantasy genre. Her best-known novel, War for the Oaks, is considered one of the pioneering works of urban fantasy. In addition to her solo works, Bull has also collaborated with other authors, including Steven Brust, with whom she wrote the epistolary novel Freedom and Necessity. Bull has also participated in Terri Windling's Borderland shared universe, which served as the setting for her 1994 novel Finder.

Bull is also an accomplished musician and has performed in several bands, including the rock-funk band Cats Laughing and the folk duo The Flash Girls. Her experiences as a musician have influenced her writing and added depth to her characters and stories. Bull has been recognized for her work with several award nominations, including for her post-apocalyptic science fiction novel Bone Dance, which was nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards.

In addition to her writing and musical pursuits, Bull is also the Executive Producer of Shadow Unit, a science fiction thriller TV show in prose form. She created the show with her husband, author Will Shetterly, and it features a talented writing staff, including Steven Brust, Holly Black, and Elizabeth Bear. Bull and Shetterly currently reside in Arizona with their cat, Barnabas.
