Eve Zaremba

Eve Zaremba was a Canadian mystery writer best known for her groundbreaking series featuring Helen Keremos, a private detective regarded as the first lesbian protagonist in an ongoing mystery series. Her novels, including "A Reason to Kill," "Work for a Million," and "The Butterfly Recluse," blended detective fiction with social commentary, exploring themes of identity and justice. Zaremba's work gained recognition for its progressive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters and its engagement with feminist ideals.

Born in Poland, Zaremba emigrated to Canada in 1952 after living briefly in the UK. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1963 and became an active participant in the Women's Liberation Movement during the 1970s and 1980s. A founding member of the feminist publication "Broadside", she contributed articles and reviews to various outlets, further establishing her voice in feminist discourse. Zaremba's writing career reflected her commitment to challenging societal norms, both through her fiction and her activism.
