Maia Kobabe

Maia Kobabe is a nonbinary, queer author and illustrator whose work explores themes of identity, sexuality, and personal transformation. Eir debut graphic memoir, "Gender Queer: A Memoir," received critical acclaim, earning a Stonewall Honor and an Alex Award from the American Library Association in 2020. The book became widely recognized as the most challenged title in the United States from 2021 to 2023. Kobabe has also contributed short comics and essays to prominent outlets such as The New Yorker, The Nib, NPR, Time Magazine, and The Washington Post.

With an MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts, Kobabe blends personal narrative with broader social commentary, often touching on anti-fascism, fairy tales, and homesickness. Eir second book, "Breathe: Journeys to Healthy Binding," co-authored with Dr. Sarah Peitzmeier, was published in 2024. Kobabe is currently working on "Opting Out," a middle-grade graphic novel slated for release in 2026. Through eir writing and illustration, Kobabe continues to amplify marginalized voices and challenge societal norms.
