Maj Sjöwall is a highly regarded Swedish author, particularly known for her collaborative work with her late partner, Per Wahloo. Specializing in crime fiction, the pair gained significant recognition for their series featuring the Swedish police detective, Martin Beck. Sjöwall's work has not only been well-received critically but has also been honored with prestigious awards. Their novel "The Laughing Policeman" not only won the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1971 but was also adapted into a film starring Walter Matthau.
Beyond her collaborative efforts with Wahloo, Sjöwall has made a name for herself as a translator and a solo author. During her 13-year relationship with Wahloo, the couple wrote ten mystery books together, all centered around the character of Martin Beck. However, their partnership extended beyond their professional lives, as they were also a married couple and shared a commitment to Marxism.
Sadly, Maj Sjöwall passed away in April 2020, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of crime fiction. Her work, both alongside Wahloo and in her individual pursuits, has left an indelible mark on the genre and continues to be celebrated by readers and critics alike. Sjöwall's ability to craft compelling narratives and complex characters has solidified her place as a leading voice in Swedish crime fiction.
