Marian Womack is a successful bilingual author, known for her fantasy and science fiction stories. Born in Andalusia, Spain, Womack has received her education in Glasgow and Oxford. She has written several standalone novels in Spanish and has recently shifted her focus to English-language stories. Womack is particularly famous for her book "Lost Objects," published in 2018. She is currently working on her latest novel, "The Golden Key," which is due for publication.
Womack is not only a writer but also an editor and educator. She is the co-founder of Calque Press and has co-edited academic books, including "Beyond the Back Room: New Perspectives on Carmen Martín Gaite" and "The Best of Spanish Steampunk." She has contributed to over fifteen anthologies of short fiction and has published her work in Spanish, including "Memoria de la Nieve" and "Calle Andersen." Her journalism and critical writing on Spanish literature, culture, and society have appeared in various academic journals, as well as the Times Literary Supplement, the New Internationalist, and the digital version of El País.
Womack's writing is characterized by strange landscapes, ghostly encounters, and uncanny transformations. She is interested in the intersection of storytelling with other media and has collaborated with diverse initiatives, including art installations, video games, or activist campaigns. She co-runs the publishing project Calque Press. Her short story collection, "Lost Objects," was shortlisted for two BSFA awards and one BSF award. Her novel "The Swimmers" is a response to Wide Sargasso Sea set in a near-future Andalusia. She has also authored a series of gothic/environmental novels featuring female detective Helena Walton-Cisneros in fin-de-siècle London. Womack holds a MSt in Creative Writing and a PhD in Creative Writing and Environmental Humanities. She currently resides in Cambridge.
