Mark Bowden

Mark Robert Bowden is an accomplished American writer, best known for his novel "Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War." Born on July 17, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri, Bowden developed an early interest in journalism after reading Tom Wolfe's book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" during his time at Loyola College in Maryland.

After graduating in 1973, Bowden pursued a career in journalism, eventually becoming a staff writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer from 1979 to 2003. During his tenure at The Philadelphia Inquirer, Bowden received international recognition for his work, earning numerous awards. He has also contributed to various publications such as Men's Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, Sports Illustrated, and Rolling Stone.

Bowden's writing has earned him widespread acclaim, with his book "Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War" being adapted into a successful movie of the same title, directed by Ridley Scott. The book provides a detailed account of the United States military raid in Somalia and went on to receive two Academy Awards.

In addition to "Black Hawk Down," Bowden has written several other notable books, including "Hue 1968," "Guests of the Ayatollah," and "Killing Pablo." He has been a contributing writer to The Atlantic for many years and has reported for The Philadelphia Inquirer for over twenty-five years. Bowden currently resides in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
