Max Brand

Frederick Schiller Faust, also known as Max Brand, was a prominent American author, particularly known for his Western fiction. Faust was born in Seattle, Washington on May 29, 1892, and went on to become one of the most prolific and popular novelists in America, with his works remaining popular even today. He wrote under various pseudonyms, including Max Brand, George Owen Baxter, David Manning, Evan Evans, John Frederick, Peter Morland, George Challis, Frederick Frost, Frank Austin, and Walter C Butler.

Faust's novels were initially serialized in pulp magazines such as Street & Smith's Western Story Magazine. He gained fame for his Westerns, but he also wrote a series of pulp fiction novels about a young medical intern named Dr. James Kildare. Dr. Kildare was a non-Western character who made the transition over to several films.

Faust married Dorothy in 1917 and had three children with her. He suffered a major heart attack in 1921, which caused him to suffer from heart problems for the rest of his life. Faust was covering World War II in Italy when he was tragically killed by shrapnel on May 12, 1944, just seventeen days before his fifty-second birthday. Despite his untimely death, Faust's legacy as a renowned American author lives on, with his works continuing to be celebrated and enjoyed by readers today.
