Mel Starr is an accomplished American author, best known for his series of books, the Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon Chronicles. He was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he spent the majority of his life. Starr's love for history and writing began early in his life, and he would later go on to earn a MA in history from Western Michigan University.

He spent the majority of his teaching career in Portage, MI, where he served as the chairman of the social studies department of Portage Northern High School before retiring in 2003.
