Michael Angelo Avallone Jr., more commonly known as Michael Avallone, is a prolific American author with a focus on mystery and secret agent fiction, as well as novelizations based on TV and films. He was born in New York City and went on to become a celebrated author with a vast output of work. Over the course of his career, Avallone claims to have written over 1,000 works, including novels, short stories, and articles, all of which were published under his own name or one of his many pseudonyms.
Avallone's first novel, "The Tall Dolores," was published in 1953 and introduced the world to Ed Noon, PI. Over the next few decades, Avallone wrote over three dozen more novels featuring Ed Noon, with the final volume, "Since Noon Yesterday," remaining unpublished as of 2005. In addition to his original works, Avallone also penned numerous tie-in novels for popular TV shows and films, including "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Hawaii Five-0," "Mannix," "Friday the 13th Part III," and "Beneath the Planet of the Apes." He even wrote a novelization of the 1982 TV mini-series "A Woman Called Golda," which chronicled the life of Golda Meir.
Avallone's prolific output extended to his use of pseudonyms, as he wrote under at least 17 different names throughout his career. Some of his most notable pseudonyms include Sidney Stuart, Dorothea Nile, Edwina Noone, Priscilla Dalton, Troy Conway, Vance Stanton, Mark Dane, Steve Michaels, Lee Davis Willoughby, Max Walker, John Patrick, Jeanne-Anne dePre, Mike Avalone, Dora Highland, and Stuart Jason. Under the name Troy Conway, Avallone wrote the Rod Damon: The Coxeman novel series from 1967 to 1973, which parodied the popular "Man from U.N.C.L.E." series.
In addition to his work as an author, Avallone also served as the editor of the Mystery Writers of America newsletter from 1962 to 1965. He was married twice, first to Lucille Asero in 1949 (with whom he had one son before the marriage dissolved), and later to Fran Weinstein in 1960 (with whom he had one son and one daughter). Avallone passed away in Los Angeles.
