He was born in the Netherlands, in the city of The Hague, on April 13, 1960. Faber's parents decided to emigrate to Australia in 1967, and he spent his formative years in the suburbs of Melbourne. His passion for literature and language led him to attend the University of Melbourne, where he pursued a degree in Dutch, philosophy, rhetoric, English language, and English literature, graduating in 1980.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Faber worked a variety of jobs, including cleaning and nursing. His nursing career began after training at Marrickville and Western Suburbs hospitals in Sydney. Faber continued to nurse until the mid-1990s, eventually deciding to pursue his passion for writing as a full-time career. In 1993, Faber and his family emigrated to Scotland, where they still reside.
