Parke Godwin was a bestselling author, recognized for his work in historical fantasy and science fiction. Born in 1929, Godwin led a varied career before becoming a writer, including time as a military intelligence radio operator during the Korean War, a research technician, a stage actor, an advertising man, and a maitre d' hotel. His writing is known for its lyrical style and sardonic humor, as well as his ability to place legendary figures in realistic historical settings.\n \nGodwin's most famous works include his classic three-part retelling of the King Arthur legend, which is set in the 5th century during the collapse of the Roman Empire. This series, consisting of "Firelord," "Beloved Exile," and "The Lovers: The Legend of Tristan and Yseult," is widely regarded for its historical accuracy and engaging storytelling. In addition to his Arthurian cycle, Godwin also wrote a reinterpretation of the Robin Hood legend, set during the Norman conquest and featuring kings William the Conqueror and William Rufus as major characters. This series includes "Sherwood" and "Robin and the King."
In addition to his longer works, Godwin also wrote short fiction, which has appeared in several anthologies. His short story "Influencing the Hell out of Time and Teresa Golowitz" was even adapted as an episode of the television series "The Twilight Zone." Other notable works by Godwin include "Darker Places," "The Last Rainbow," "The Tower of Beowulf," "The Lord of Sunset," and two science fiction satires, "Waiting for the Galactic Bus" and "The Snake Oil Wars." He also collaborated with close friend Marvin Kaye on several novels, including "The Masters of Solitude," "Wintermind," and a horror novel called "A Cold Blue Light."
