Patick Radden Keefe was born in 1976 and grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He attended the Milton Academy for his high school education and furthered his studies at Columbia University. Keefe is the eldest of three siblings, with his father working in state government before becoming a real estate developer and his mother being a philosophy professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
Keefe is currently a staff writer at The New Yorker and has authored several books, including "The Snakehead" and "Chatter." His work has been featured in various prestigious publications, such as The New York Times Magazine, Slate, New York, and The New York Review of Books. He has received numerous accolades for his writing, including the 2014 National Magazine Award for Feature Writing for his story "A Loaded Gun," and was a finalist for the National Magazine Award for Reporting in 2015 and 2016. Keefe has also been honored with an Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fellowship at the New America Foundation and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Keefe is the bestselling author of five books, including "Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty," which won the Baillie Gifford Prize for Nonfiction and was a finalist for the FT Business Book of the Year. He also authored "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland," which received the National Book Critics Circle Award. His latest book is "Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks." Keefe is a recipient of the National Magazine Award for Feature Writing and the Orwell Prize for Political Writing. He also created and hosted the 8-part podcast "Wind of Change," which was named the #1 podcast of 2020 by Entertainment Weekly and the Guardian, and has been downloaded over 10 million times. Keefe grew up in Boston and currently resides in New York.
