Paulo Coelho is a renowned Brazilian author, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947. Before fully dedicating his life to literature, Coelho had worked as a theatre director, actor, lyricist, and journalist. His life-changing experience during the 1986 pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela inspired him to write "The Pilgrimage," which marked the beginning of his successful literary career.
Coelho's writing career took off in 1987 with the publication of "The Pilgrimage," followed by his groundbreaking work, "The Alchemist" in 1988. Despite its slow initial sales and his first publisher dropping the novel, "The Alchemist" went on to become one of the best-selling Brazilian books of all time. With over 200 million copies sold in at least 150 countries, Coelho has established himself as one of the most successful authors of his time. He has written numerous books, including "Brida," "The Valkyries," "By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept," "The Fifth Mountain," "Manual of a Warrior of Light," "Veronika Decides to Die," "The Devil and Miss Prym," "Eleven Minutes," "The Zahir," and "The Witch of Portobello."
Coelho's work has been recognized with over 115 awards and honors, including the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Grinzane Cavour Book Award, and the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur. He has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2007, promoting intercultural dialogue and focusing on the needs of children. Coelho is a firm believer in the internet as a new media, becoming the first best-selling author to actively support online free distribution of his work. He continues to engage with his readers through his blogs on WordPress, Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr.
