Peter Turner is an English author, born in Liverpool in 1952, known for his memoirs and non-fiction works. He was the youngest of nine children and was educated at a local comprehensive school. Turner's passion for acting began at the age of sixteen when he started working with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. He later went on to act in British theatre, both in London and in the regions. He also played significant roles in television dramas and films, including Spearhead and Derek Jarman's version of Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Turner's relationship with the Academy Award-winning American film star Gloria Grahame was a significant turning point in his life. They met in London in 1978 and became lovers, remaining together until Grahame's death from cancer in 1981. Turner's memoir, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, published in 1984, is a heartfelt account of their relationship and Grahame's final days spent with Turner and his family. The memoir was later adapted into a movie in 2017, directed by Paul McGuigan and starring Annette Bening, Jamie Bell, and Julie Walters.
In addition to his memoir, Turner has written extensively for British television and has written two screenplays. He has also written guides for travelers to New Zealand and is currently building a collection of short stories and working on his first novel.
