At the age of seventeen, Donlay earned his pilot's license, and by eighteen, he had already been published in a national aviation magazine. This early exposure to flying and writing set the stage for his successful careers as a pilot and novelist.

As a professional pilot, Donlay has had an extensive and varied career. He has worked as a flight instructor, flown a private jet for a Saudi prince, and spent twenty-eight years flying a corporate jet for a Fortune 500 company. Donlay is licensed to fly six different jets and has logged nearly 14,000 hours of flight time. His travels have taken him to over forty countries across five continents. Although he no longer flies, Donlay's love for aviation continues to inspire his writing.
