Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor, speaker, and author, who is well-known for his writing. He was born in Danville, Indiana, and has become one of the more recognizable voices who represents and knows small-town life in America. Gulley is the author of several books, including the Harmony series, Front Porch Tales, Hometown Tales, and For Everything a Season.
Gulley's Harmony series of books is particularly popular and features anecdotes from the town's citizens, followed by a sermonette. His writing is inspired by his own experiences growing up in a small town, and he has a unique ability to capture the essence of small-town American life. In addition to his fiction writing, Gulley has also authored several non-fiction books, including "If Grace Is True" and "If God Is Love," which he co-wrote with James Mulholland.
Along with his writing, Gulley is also a Quaker pastor and speaker. He currently serves as the Pastor at Fairfield Friends Meeting House in Camby, Indiana. Gulley's faith is an essential part of his life and work, and he is known for sharing his progressive spirituality in his writing and speaking engagements. He lives in Indiana with his wife, Joan, and their sons, Spencer and Sam, in a rambling old house with Gulley’s eclectic chair collection and a welcoming back porch.
Gulley is also the host of "Porch Talk with Phil Gulley" on the Indiana PBS affiliate WFYI television’s flagship show Across Indiana. He has written 21 books, including the "Harmony" series, the "Hope" series, and the "Porch Talk" essay series. His memoir, "I Love You, Miss Huddleston," was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Gulley's 22nd book, "Unlearning God: How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe," was released on September 25, 2018.
