Philip Yancey

Philip Yancey is a well-known American author of spiritual books. He was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and went on to earn graduate degrees in Communications and English from Wheaton College Graduate School and the University of Chicago. Yancey's career as a writer began in earnest in 1978, after he had worked as an editor and publisher for Campus Life Magazine. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including Reader’s Digest, Publisher’s Weekly, National Wildlife, Christian Century, and The Reformed Journal. He has also contributed to Christianity Today magazine, where he served as Editor at Large.

Yancey's books have had a significant impact on readers around the world, selling over 15 million copies and being translated into more than 30 languages. His work has won numerous awards, including 13 Gold Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Two of his most popular books, "What's So Amazing About Grace" and "The Jesus I Never Knew," have won the ECPA Christian Book of the Year Award. Some of his other notable works include "Where Is God When It Hurts," "The Student Bible," and "Disappointment with God."

In 2021, Yancey released two new books: "A Companion in Crisis" and his long-awaited memoir, "Where the Light Fell." His writing covers a wide range of topics, but often explores questions of faith and spirituality. Despite growing up in a strict religious household, Yancey has described himself as a "pilgrim, still 'in recovery' from a bad church upbringing, searching for the possibility of a faith rooted in grace instead of fear."

In addition to his writing, Yancey has been recognized for his contributions to the world of Christian literature. In 1996, Christian bookstore managers selected "The Jesus I Never Knew" as the Book of the Year, and in 1998, "What’s So Amazing About Grace?" won the same award. Yancey's work has resonated with readers from all walks of life, and his books continue to inspire and challenge readers to explore their own faith and spirituality.
