Randall Jarrell was an American poet, critic, and translator renowned for his evocative works exploring themes of war, loneliness, and artistic expression. He authored eight poetry collections, including "Little Friend, Little Friend" (1945), and penned the satirical novel "Pictures from an Institution." His literary versatility extended to children's books, notably collaborating with illustrator Maurice Sendak on four titles, as well as acclaimed translations such as Goethe's "Faust: Part I" and Chekhov's "The Three Sisters," the latter adapted for Broadway.
Jarrell's career was marked by both critical and academic distinction. He received the National Book Award for Poetry in 1960 and served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1957 to 1958. A longtime professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, he influenced generations of writers while contributing to the literary community as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His legacy endures through his poignant verse, incisive criticism, and enduring translations.
