René Goscinny

René Goscinny was a French comics writer and editor, best known for creating the Asterix series with Albert Uderzo. Goscinny was born in Paris in 1926 to Polish Jewish immigrants, Stanislaw Goscinny and Bereśniak-Gościnna. When he was two years old, his family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent a happy childhood and developed a love for drawing. However, his life was upended when his father died when he was 17, forcing him to find work to support himself. He worked as an accountant assistant, an illustrator for an advertising agency, and served in the French army as the appointed artist of the 141st Alpine Infantry battalion.

Goscinny is also known for his work on the Lucky Luke series with Morris, which is considered the series' golden age. He was born in Paris and spent his childhood in Buenos Aires before moving to New York in 1945. During his time in New York, he met many people who would become important collaborators, including Morris, the creator of Lucky Luke. Goscinny returned to Europe in 1951 and worked for the World Press Agency in Belgium. He was fired in 1956 for trying to put in place a charter to protect the status of cartoonists and scenarists. In the following years, Goscinny's talent matured, and he collaborated with Morris on the Lucky Luke series and worked on the scenario of "Le petit Nicolas" with its creator, Sempe. In 1959, Goscinny co-founded the magazine "Pilote," which aimed to change the way graphic novels were perceived in France. It was during this time that Goscinny and Uderzo created Asterix, which became a massive success and solidified Goscinny's place as a leading figure in French comics.
