His mother, Rebecca Harding Davis, was a prominent writer during her day, and his father, Lemuel Clarke Davis, was a journalist who also edited the Philadelphia Public Ledger.
Richard Harding Davis is considered a pioneering figure in journalism, particularly known for his coverage of various wars. He was the first American war correspondent to cover the Spanish-American War, the Second Boer War, and the First World War.
