Robert Barnard was an English author, renowned for his contributions to the crime fiction genre. He was born on November 23, 1936, in Essex, England and was educated at the Colchester Royal Grammar School and Balliol College, Oxford. Barnard began his writing career while working as a lecturer at the University of Tromsø in Norway, where he published his first crime novel, "A Little Local Murder," in 1976.
Barnard is best known for his mystery novels, particularly the Charlie Peace series and the Perry Trethowan novels. His writing style is characterized by its wit, intelligence, and engaging plotlines. In addition to his original works, Barnard also wrote under the pseudonym "Bernard Bastable," producing four novels, one of which featured Mozart as a detective.
Barnard's accomplishments in the crime fiction genre were recognized in 2003 when he was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writers Association for a lifetime of achievement. Throughout his career, Barnard has written over 40 books and numerous short stories, cementing his place as one of the UK's most famous crime writers. He was not only a writer but also an intellectual, political activist, and literature critic. Barnard's favorite crime fiction author was Agatha Christie, and in 1980, he published a critique of her work titled "A Talent to Deceive: An Appreciation of Agatha Christie."
Barnard lived in Yorkshire with his wife, Louise. He continued to write and publish novels until his death in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of work that continues to be celebrated and enjoyed by readers around the world. Barnard's series include Perry Trethowan and Charlie Peace, both of which are popular and well-regarded in the crime fiction genre.
