Ursula Hegi

Ursula Hegi is a German-born American author whose work explores themes of cultural identity, memory, and the lingering impact of historical trauma. Best known for her Burgdorf Cycle - a series of interconnected novels set in a fictional German town - she gained widespread recognition with "Stones from the River," a 1994 Oprah's Book Club selection that sold millions of copies. Her other notable works include "Floating in My Mother's Palm," "The Vision of Emma Blau," and "Children and Fire," all part of the same acclaimed cycle.

Born in Düsseldorf in 1946, Hegi grew up in postwar Germany, where the unspoken scars of World War II deeply influenced her writing. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1965, she earned degrees from the University of New Hampshire before launching her literary career. Her early novels were set in America, but she later turned to Germany as a setting to interrogate her conflicted heritage. Blending meticulous historical detail with lyrical prose, her work often examines the silence surrounding collective guilt and the complexities of belonging.

Hegi has received numerous accolades, including an NEA Fellowship, a PEN/Faulkner Award, and the Italian Grinzane Cavour Prize. A respected literary critic, she has contributed reviews to The New York Times and The Washington Post. She has taught creative writing at institutions such as Eastern Washington University, Barnard College, and the University of California, Irvine, and currently serves as an instructor in the MFA program at Stony Brook Southampton.
