Zachary Weinersmith is an American cartoonist best known for his long-running webcomic "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal" (SMBC), which has garnered a substantial following since its inception. He has also created other webcomics, including the completed "Captain Stupendous," illustrated by Chris Jones, and "Snowflakes," co-written with James Ashby. Weinersmith's work has earned critical acclaim, including the Web Cartoonists' Choice Award for Outstanding Single Panel Comic in 2006 and 2007, with additional nominations in 2003 and 2008.
Weinersmith began publishing comics online in the late 1990s, initially favoring multi-panel formats before shifting to predominantly single-panel strips to avoid what he perceived as a webcomic cliché. His comic "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal" blends humor with intellectual themes, covering topics such as science, philosophy, economics, and relationships. The comic's broad appeal has led to features in prominent publications like "The Economist", "The Washington Post", and "BoingBoing", amassing over 250,000 daily readers at its peak.
With a background in literature and partial studies in physics, Weinersmith infuses his work with a distinctive blend of wit and analytical depth. Beyond comics, he co-founded the sketch comedy group SMBC Theater in 2009. He resides in Southern California, where he continues to produce new content for his dedicated audience.
