Gerard Way is an accomplished American musician, songwriter, singer, and comic book author, best known as the co-founder and lead vocalist of the rock band My Chemical Romance. Way was born in 1977 in Summit, New Jersey, to Donald and Donna Lee Way, and spent his childhood in Belleville, New Jersey. From a young age, Way was already singing in public, having been cast in a musical production as Peter Pan. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, played a significant role in his creative development, teaching him to perform, paint, and sing. His love for music was further nurtured by his fascination with the glam metal band Bon Jovi. By the time he was sixteen, Way had already begun penning his own comics. He later attended the School of Visual Arts in New York to study fine art and interned at Cartoon Network.
