Ian Falconer is a highly acclaimed author and illustrator, best known for his work on the bestselling "Olivia" series. Falconer was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut in 1959 and went on to study art history at New York University. Prior to his success in children's literature, Falconer had a varied career in the fine arts, publishing, ballet, and opera.

The book follows the adventures of a young and spirited pig named Olivia, a character that Falconer initially created as a gift for his young niece.
