John Maddox Roberts is a highly prolific American author, known for his work in various genres including science fiction, fantasy, mystery, historical fiction, and action. Roberts has written numerous books and series, and has contributed to popular series such as Conan and Dragonlance. He is perhaps best known for his current writing in the SPQR historical fiction series, which is set in Rome and is still ongoing.
Born on June 25, 1947 in Ohio, Roberts spent most of his youth in Texas after his family moved there. He has also lived in California and New Mexico. Roberts has visited various places in the US, England, Mexico, and Scotland. His writing career began in 1977 with the publication of his debut book, "The Strayed Sheep of Charum." He joined the US Army in 1967 and served for three years, including a successful tour of Vietnam. After his return, he joined the Special Forces division of the US Army. He currently resides in Estancia, New Mexico with his wife.
