Kate Pankhurst is a renowned British author and illustrator, known for her captivating children's picture books. Born and raised in Liverpool, Pankhurst currently resides in Leeds, where she writes and illustrates her works from a studio in an old mill. She is often accompanied by her dog, Olive, who keeps her company during her writing sessions. Pankhurst's love for reading and writing began in her childhood, thanks to her father who would take her to the local library. She was always fascinated by the mystery novels she would find there, hoping to stumble upon a mystery that she would then resolve.
Pankhurst's journey to becoming a successful author and illustrator began in earnest when she won second place in the 2002 Macmillan Prize for Picture Book Illustration. However, it was her groundbreaking book, "Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World," that catapulted her to fame. The book, which she wrote and illustrated, became a phenomenon and was nominated for a Kate Greenaway award in 2018. It was later adapted into a series, further solidifying Pankhurst's status as a leading author and illustrator. Her books have been translated into 22 languages and have been shortlisted for numerous awards, including the NIBBIES award for Children's Illustrated & Non-fiction.
In addition to her successful "Fantastically Great Women" series, Pankhurst has also recently launched her latest non-fiction picture book series, "We Are All Astronauts." She is a firm believer that even quick, wonky drawings can spark ideas for amazing plots, and she loves to doodle in her sketchbook to come up with her best ideas. Most days, Pankhurst can be found illustrating and writing in her Leeds studio, with Olive by her side. Her works are a testament to her passion for storytelling and her commitment to creating inspiring and engaging books for children.
