Born in Manchester, Robertson attended the University of Manchester as a teenager, where he graduated with a degree in literature and English. After university, he spent several years living abroad in countries such as Australia, Holland, and France, where he worked various jobs including mobile phone network engineer, holiday rep, train cleaner, and door-to-door salesman. His love for writing and inquisitive nature eventually led him back to university, where he studied journalism. He then worked for several papers in Greater Manchester and Lancashire, eventually becoming an editor. After working as an editor for four years, Robertson left his job due to impending cutbacks and decided to focus on his dream of becoming a novelist.
