Vaclav Smil is a distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He has had an impressive academic career, having completed his graduate studies at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Carolinum University in Prague and at the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences of the Pennsylvania State University. Smil's research interests are vast and interdisciplinary, encompassing areas such as energy, environmental, food, population, economic, historical, and public policy studies. He has also applied his expertise to the study of energy, food, and environmental affairs in China.
Smil is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and in 2010, he was named by Foreign Policy as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers.
